Lois Ann McPherson Smith

Smith-Obit-Photo-197x300Lois Ann McPherson Smith, 83, of Amarillo, died Saturday, March 30, 2013.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2013 at the original building of First Baptist Church, with Dr. Howard K. Batson, pastor, officiating. Private burial will be at Llano Cemetery officiated by David Green. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Lois Ann was born February 9, 1930 in Vernon, Texas to John Elmer and Bertha Lois McPherson. Lois Ann graduated Vernon High School, and continued her education, graduating Baylor University with undergraduate and master’s degrees in psychology, education and sociology. She married Aubrey Lyndol Smith, Jr., on November 21, 1951 in Dallas.

Throughout her career as associate psychologist and educational diagnostician, she served as a teacher, staff psychologist and guidance counselor. Many in our community have fond memories and deep gratitude for her many years of service as senior guidance counselor at Tascosa High School.

Lois Ann was a member of the Texas Psychological Association, Psi Chi National Honorary Fraternity, Panhandle Counselors Association, Texas Association of Educational Diagnosticians, Texas State Teachers Association. Community services include: Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority Member; Chairman of Professional Advisory committee of Mental Health Board; Junior League Planning Committee on Learning Disabilities; Vice-President of Oral Rehabilitation Study Group of Southwest Wives Association; Board Member of United Fund; Officer in Panhandle Dental Wives Association; President of Wolflin Elementary PTA; Amarillo Symphony Guild; and many others.

Lois Ann will be laid to rest aside her husband, Dr. Aubrey Lyndol Smith, Jr., who died unexpectedly on December 22, 1973.

Survivors include her son Dr. Aubrey L. Smith III and his wife Robin Hendrickson Smith with their three children Brittany, Will, and Tyler; and her daughter, Kimberly Smith.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial to the Presbyterian Children’s Home, 3400 Bowie, Amarillo, TX 79109.
