Dortha Stegall

Dortha was born in Plaska, Texas to the late O.M. and Bertha Smith and was the youngest of five children. The family settled in Plainview, Texas, where she met and married Carlos R. Stegall.

Dortha and Carl travelled extensively during their marriage, raising four children and creating memories that would be told as stories for generations to come. She was a devoted and loving Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother and Great-Great-Grandmother who was very proud of her family. Spending time together was important her. She had many interests throughout her life, and loved sharing those with her family; cooking, ceramics, rock collecting and gardening are just a few. She was known (and loved) for her feisty sense of humor and her ‘slight of hand’ when playing board games, card games or dominoes.

There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate her life at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Washington Avenue Christian Church with Rev. Jim Shelburne officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

She is preceded in death by her parents, O.M. and Bertha Smith; brothers’ O.M Smith, Nelson Smith; sisters Maxine Gardner and Evelene Watson; and sons’ Ray Stegall and Melvin Stegall.

She is survived by her daughter, Cherie Hunter and her husband John, and by her son Mark Stegall, daughters-in-Law, Davie Stegall and Gloria Stegall; and 10 Grandchildren, 19 Great-Grandchildren, and 4 Great-Great-Grandchildren.
